Viral Reddit post sparks health scare as nail marks raise melanoma concerns

New Delhi, Jan 9: What began as a casually shared image on social media soon turned into a serious health discussion after a woman posted a photograph of faint black lines on her thumb and toe nails, prompting strangers online to urge her to seek immediate medical attention.

The woman had shared the image on Reddit’s r/mildly interesting forum, captioning it simply, “These black lines on my thumb and my toe.” While she appeared unconcerned, users quickly flagged the marks as a possible warning sign of melanonychia — a condition that can sometimes be linked to subungual melanoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer that develops under the nail.

Several commenters cautioned her not to ignore the symptom. “Most cases like this I’ve seen on this app are melanoma… please go to the doctor ASAP,” one user wrote, while others echoed similar concerns, advising medical evaluation.

Medical sources explain that melanonychia, characterised by black or brown streaks running along the nail, can be caused by trauma, nutritional deficiencies or medications. According to Healthline and dermatology experts, it is also more common in people with darker skin tones and often harmless. However, when it appears suddenly or in a single nail, it can occasionally signal nail melanoma.

Doctors also look for additional warning signs such as nail splitting, irregular pigmentation, swelling, bleeding or lifting of the nail from the nail bed. Experts stress that while such marks do not automatically mean cancer, they should not be ignored.

Some Reddit users, including those claiming medical backgrounds, urged calm while still recommending tests. “The chances of having melanoma in two nail beds at once is virtually zero,” one commenter noted, adding that a biopsy would still be a prudent step.

Others shared personal experiences to highlight the importance of early detection. One user recounted losing a toe after a delayed diagnosis, while another warned that melanoma is among the most aggressive skin cancers but highly treatable if caught early.

Health authorities, including the NHS, underline that early diagnosis significantly improves outcomes in skin cancer cases. While sun exposure is a major risk factor for melanoma, nail melanoma is not always linked to UV light, making vigilance even more important.

The woman who posted the image has not confirmed whether she sought medical advice, but the post has triggered widespread discussion on social media about recognising subtle health warning signs and seeking timely medical care.
