Mangaluru, Jan 10: An evening soaked in nostalgia, melody and timeless memories unfolded at the Lions Seva Mandir, Kadri, on Friday as Lions Prakosta, Lions District 317D, in association with the Lions Club of Mangaluru, presented ‘Suhana Safar – An Evening of Old Filmy Hits and Binaca Geetmala’, a grand tribute to legendary radio icon Ameen Sayani.
The musical celebration recreated the magic of the iconic Binaca Geetmala era, featuring popular Hindi film songs from 1955 to 1980, and received an overwhelming response from music lovers across the city.





The programme was inaugurated by Walter Nandalike, founder and editor-in-chief of Daijiworld Media Pvt Ltd, while Ln Kudpi Aravind Shenoy, governor, Lions District 317D, presided over the event. Gurudatta Shenoy, managing partner, Vertex Workspace and Mukund Realty, graced the occasion as the guest of honour.
Special guests included Dr Kumble Ananth Prabhu, professor of surgery, Yenepoya Medical College; Ln M Rajesh Kamath, president, Lions Club of Mangaluru; Ln M Govardhan Shetty, 2nd vice district governor, Lions District 317D; and Ln Kumble Narasimha Prabhu, district coordinator, Lions Prakosta.
The highlight of the evening was the soulful and high-standard performances by Malini Keshava Prasad and Dr Anantha Prabhu, whose renditions drew loud applause and admiration for their Bollywood-level finesse.
The event also showcased outstanding performances by talented singers Umakanth Nayak and Sahana Kamath, along with co-singers Rohith Shenoy, Venugopal Shenoy, Apeksha Pai, Rachana Kamath and Rajesh Kamath, who captivated the audience with evergreen melodies.
Music arrangements by Muralidhar Kamath and Deepu (Alonso Deepak) added rich depth to the performances. The high-quality sound system by Jayesh and filmy visual displays by S Balakrishna Nayak enhanced the overall ambience, making the evening visually and acoustically delightful.
Adding further charm to the programme, Team Upasana, Mangaluru, presented vibrant filmy dance performances, while a melodious mouth organ recital by Madhusudhan Bhandekar emerged as a pleasant surprise for the audience.
Expressing his gratitude, organiser Ln Kumble Narasimha Prabhu thanked all the singers, musicians, technicians, sponsors and the audience for their wholehearted support and cooperation, and announced that ‘Binaca Geetmala – Part 2’ will be organised soon.
The nostalgic musical evening stood as a grand celebration of India’s golden film music era and will be remembered as one of the finest cultural events in the city’s recent past.
