Mangaluru, Jan 12: A migrant labourer from Jharkhand was allegedly assaulted by four persons of the majority community in Kulur after they accused him of being a Bangladeshi national and demanded that he produce identity documents, police sources said.
The victim, identified as Diljaan Ansari, has been working in Mangaluru for the past 10–15 years, usually staying for about four to six months each year for work. According to information available, the accused allegedly made unwarranted remarks and insisted that Ansari prove his nationality. When he maintained that he was an Indian citizen, they allegedly assaulted him, using his own work implements to hit him on the head, causing heavy bleeding.

A local woman who is of the same community as the assaulters reportedly intervened and rescued Ansari. Fearing repercussions, the migrant labourer initially did not lodge a complaint and returned home. The matter later came to the notice of the police through local leaders.
Police said the facts were verified and it was confirmed that Ansari is an Indian citizen who had come to Mangaluru for work. Based on the findings, a case under Section 307 of the IPC (attempt to murder) has been registered.
The accused have been identified as Sagar, Dhanush, Lalu alias Rathish, and Mohan, all residents of Kulur. Police have been instructed to arrest the accused immediately, sources added.
