New Delhi, Jan 17: As passenger traffic surges on long-distance trains, Indian Railways has reiterated a little-known but highly beneficial provision that allows travellers to be upgraded to a higher class without paying any additional fare.
The auto-upgradation facility, if opted for at the time of booking, can enable passengers to travel in air-conditioned coaches even after booking lower-class tickets.

Railway officials say many passengers fail to benefit from the facility simply due to lack of awareness. Auto-upgradation means that if seats remain vacant in a higher class at the time of chart preparation, the Railways may automatically upgrade tickets booked in lower classes, without charging passengers any extra amount. The entire process is handled internally by the Railways.
From Sleeper to AC — how the upgrade works
The facility is available only between specific classes. Sleeper class tickets can be upgraded to Third AC, Third AC tickets to Second AC, and Second AC tickets to First AC. However, officials clarify that such upgrades are not guaranteed and depend entirely on the availability of vacant seats in the higher class.
Opt-in mandatory while booking
Railway authorities stress that a common misconception among passengers is that the upgrade applies automatically to all tickets. In reality, the benefit is available only if passengers select the ‘Consider for Auto Upgradation’ option while booking their tickets. If the option is not selected, the ticket will not be upgraded even if higher-class seats remain empty.
This option is available on the IRCTC website and mobile application during the booking process, usually at the bottom or sometimes at the top of the booking form. Selecting the option before confirming the ticket is essential to be considered for an upgrade.
Major relief for waiting-list passengers
The auto-upgradation rule has proved especially useful for passengers on the waiting list. For instance, if a Sleeper class ticket remains on the waiting list but seats are available in Third AC, the ticket may be confirmed in Third AC. This not only prevents last-minute travel cancellations but also ensures a more comfortable journey.
Railway officials advise passengers to remain alert while booking tickets and to opt for auto-upgradation whenever possible. With the right information and a little caution, travellers can take full advantage of this Indian Railways provision and enjoy a better travel experience at no additional cost.
