Ludhiana, Jan 20: In a shocking incident, a Nepalese maid, who had been hired barely 15 days ago, allegedly drugged a family driver and fled with gold and diamond jewellery worth over Rs 70 lakh from a businessman’s house in Sarabha Nagar.

According to police, the accused mixed a sedative into the driver’s food, rendering him unconscious, before stealing around 50 tolas (approximately half a kilogram) of gold and diamond jewellery from the house and escaping.

The incident came to light when the family returned home around 2 am after attending a birthday party. They were stunned to find the driver lying unconscious on a sofa in the drawing room. Despite repeated attempts, he could not be woken up.

When the family searched for the maid, identified as Parvati, she was found missing. A subsequent check of the house revealed that the jewellery had been stolen.

Based on a complaint lodged by the house owner, Ravneet Singh, Police Division 5 registered a case against the accused and launched a probe. Police said raids are being conducted to trace her whereabouts.

Investigators also suspect the involvement of two unidentified accomplices who allegedly connived with the maid in executing the theft. Further investigation is underway.
