Chandigarh, Jan 21: Two accused involved in the firing incident at a chemist shop in Sector 32 were arrested after an encounter with the Chandigarh Crime Branch near the Sector 39 Grain Market in the early hours of Wednesday.

The encounter took place around 6 am when a Crime Branch team, during routine checking, signalled a suspicious car to stop. However, the occupants allegedly attempted to flee, prompting police to open fire in self-defence. During the retaliatory action, both accused sustained bullet injuries to their legs.

The injured have been identified as Rahul and Rocky. They were immediately shifted to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector-16, for treatment. A third accused, identified as Preet, who was allegedly driving the car, has also been arrested.

Earlier, the accused had allegedly opened fire at Sevak Pharmacy in Sector 32. At the time of the incident, the shop owner’s son, Tanish, was present at the counter and narrowly escaped unhurt. He immediately alerted his family. The shop owner, Jagdish, a resident of Sector 32, later reached the spot and shared details with the police.

Following the firing incident, teams from the Sector-34 Police Station, Crime Branch, Operation Cell and District Crime Branch rushed to the scene. A forensic team recovered one empty cartridge from the spot.

CCTV footage showed two youths arriving on an Activa scooter, firing at the pharmacy and fleeing, which helped police identify the accused.

Police officials said interrogation of the injured and arrested accused is under way. The role of other associates, including possible links to a gangster network and the suspected involvement of a police personnel, is also being thoroughly investigated.
