Beltangady: Bike theft bid foiled; public chase, assault accused, hand them over to police

Beltangady, Jan 23: Two persons accused of attempting to steal a motorcycle were caught by members of the public after a chase, allegedly assaulted, tied to a tree and later handed over to Venur police at Palaragoli in Marodi village of Beltangady taluk.

The incident occurred between 2.10 am and 2.30 am on January 20. The accused have been identified as Moiddin Nasir and Abdul Samad (29), residents of Bengre in Kuloor of Mangaluru city. According to the complaint, the duo was spotted near the house of Deviprasad (22). A neighbour alerted the family after noticing suspicious activity in the area.

Deviprasad, who was attending a Nemotsava programme nearby, rushed to his house along with others and allegedly found the accused fleeing with his motorcycle bearing registration number KA-19-W-407. When they were chased and intercepted, the accused allegedly assaulted Deviprasad and attempted to escape with the bike. On receiving information, a group of around 25 to 30 locals gathered at the spot, overpowered the duo and restrained them until the police arrived.

Based on a complaint filed by Deviprasad, Venur police have registered a case against Abdul Samad and Moyiddin Nasir under Sections 303(2) and 307 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and have taken up further investigation.

Videos related to the incident are reportedly circulating on social media.

Counter complaint lodged by bike theft attempt accused

Meanwhile, in a counter-complaint, Abdul Samad, has alleged that while he and his associate were near the roadside motorcycle, a group of around 25 to 30 people unlawfully gathered, surrounded him and the latter, abused them in filthy language, assaulted them with hands and wooden sticks, tied them to a tree, and issued life threats. Acting on this complaint, Venur police registered another case under sections 189(2), 191(2), 191(3), 352, 115(2), 118(1), 351(2) read with section 190 of the BNS, 2023.

Police said that both cases have been taken up for investigation and further probe is under way.

    Look at their body/physic being over fed by easy money. Must have gone there to rob some cattle. Wasting life and living life without any conern or self respect and any moral values. Strange !
