Karnataka jail authorities impose strict curbs on outside food, clothes for prisoners

Bengaluru, Jan 25: Karnataka government jail authorities have imposed strict restrictions on food, clothing and other items brought from outside for prisoners, a move that reportedly shocked inmates, including actor Darshan and Pavithra Gowda.

DGP of Prisons Alok Kumar issued a firm directive instructing jail officials to regulate the supply of food, clothing, and bedding, emphasising that all provisions must now be strictly in accordance with jail rules.

Families may continue to provide packed food items during visitation hours, but these must remain in designated areas.

Specific limits have been set: banana, apple, mango, pear, and sapota up to 2 kg per inmate, while dry fruits and bakery items cannot exceed 500 grams. Inmates under investigation may receive two sets of clothing and two inner garments, with no additional clothing allowed.

The circular mandates two-stage inspections: an initial physical check, followed by a security screening. Jail authorities may conduct additional checks if necessary, and the rules are to be implemented immediately.

The restrictions follow concerns raised in the High Court regarding alleged special privileges and preferential treatment for certain prisoners. Advocates representing Renukaswamy had questioned which inmates were receiving special facilities, prompting the court to seek clarification.

“This decision applies to all prisoners, including those associated with the Darshan gang,” officials said. “It ensures that the supply of food, clothing and other materials from outside is strictly monitored and regulated.”
