Udupi, Jan 26: Stating that the state government is keen on developing tourism across the entire coastal belt, including islands, with a fresh perspective, Udupi district in-charge minister and minister for women and child development Lakshmi Hebbalkar said that such initiatives would open new avenues not only for the coastal region but also for the future of Karnataka and the country.

She was speaking after hoisting the national flag at the 77th Republic Day celebrations held at St Mary’s Island on Monday, January 26. Lakshmi Hebbalkar said that as many as 116 islands in the state, including St Mary’s Island, have remained neglected over the years. Despite possessing immense natural beauty and tourism potential, these resources have not been effectively utilised. Recently, an all-day coastal tourism conclave was organised in Mangaluru to discuss strategies for developing tourism in the region.

The conclave was attended by the chief minister, deputy chief minister, elected representatives from coastal districts, and senior officials. “After years of neglect, we have now taken concrete steps to promote tourism along the coast. The success of this new initiative depends on the cooperation, guidance, and suggestions of the people,” minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar said.

Calling the occasion a rare and special moment, minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar said she felt privileged to hoist the national flag and address the gathering at St Mary’s Island, the largest island in Karnataka. She also shared her experience of inspecting 11 boats of the Coastal Security Police during her visit, describing it as an exciting and memorable experience.

Appreciating the services of security personnel and volunteers, minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar said that coastal police, fishermen working as informants for national security, beach-cleaning volunteers, and members of the Coastal Guard and Naval forces were all true patriots and real heroes. “You are working day and night, risking your lives to protect the nation and its citizens. I salute your dedication and service,” she said. She also urged personnel to prioritise their own safety while performing their duties.

Among those present on the occasion were MLC Channaraj Hattiholi, Coastal Development Board chairman M A Gaffoor, District Guarantee Schemes Implementation Committee chairman Ashok Kumar Kodavoor, deputy commissioner T K Swaroopa T K, Zilla Panchayat CEO Prateek Bayal, superintendent of police Hariram Shankar, and several other dignitaries.
