Udupi Bypoll: Young Candidate Asadulla Katpady Attempts to Turn the Tide

By Inchara - Udupi
Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (RD)

Udupi, Mar 5: A young man who toiled in a canteen in the court complex and earned a degree in law despite acute poverty, he now aspires to become a people’s representative.

He is none other than Asadulla Katpady, son of the late Mohammed Ali. Asadulla has already submitted his nomination papers as an independent candidate for the forthcoming Udupi-Chikmagalur Lok Sabha bypoll. He is the youngest of all the candidates contesting from different political parties.

Asadulla has done BA and LLB and practices as a lawyer, but is more into journalism.
“I am contesting the elections with the objective of seeking prominence for youth in politics,” says Asadulla, who is contesting as an independent candidate out of his own free will, without giving into the assurances of political parties.

He has bagged prizes in sports and elocution in his college days. He has been taking up cases of human rights violation since the past three years. It’s significant that he was in the news for filing a public interest litigation (PIL) at High Court over environmental destruction caused by a fishmeal factory in the locality of Udyavar, near here.

Asadulla completed his studies the hard way, having to earn and finance his own education from primary school to law college. He worked as a newspaper vendor, did odd jobs to support his studies and while working in the court canteen, he completed his law.

"The general notion is that only the wealthy with political clout can contest the polls. I am in the poll fray to prove that even an ordinary citizen can contest," says Asadulla.

"Major political parties have proved to be corrupt, and their candidates arrive at the doorsteps of voters only during poll campaign. I hope the youth get due prominence in state politics as they account for 60 percent of total population,” says Asadulla.

Whether Asadulla's charm and freshness attracts the young voters would be known only after the bypoll results. Nevertheless, it is heartening that while most young men and women without political backgrounds choose to stay away from politics, Asadulla has taken it up in a bid to make a difference.

Asadullah may be a very talented guy, but this not the way to contest election, wonder what he is trying to prove, unless some one has bribed him to contest just to split some votes on religious ground, people from katpady dont know him, he should start from the grass root level and he will have a future he has the determination, you cannot become a millionare overnight same goes with politics, no leader rises overnight, unless there is a diffrent motive to spoil the votes, for sure he wont even cross the deposit margin, but will help a honest man to lose, he will regret it later in life not now

Right Said Ismail...but you should do some inrospect within your people. Can you gaurantee your own people will give him vote ? no right ? coz you guys are brainwashed to go and support 22/4% secular party. So even if he crosses few hundred votes, it will be enough for you to add another reason other than your obvious Muscle power, money power, liquer power made BJP to win if in case. This time you have Assad power to blame in that case & am sure your party people might be workign hard day in and out to ask this young man to withdraw from the contest. Its because of sensible voting by majority of the people that in this gutter there are atleast few good politicians getting elected in the country, otherwise if all the communities like others blindly had gone with the party which advocates their religious sentiments, then am sure you must be smart enough to know who would have been in power in India and who would have to do some sirty tricks to enter through back doors ???.... Vote wisly, not for reservation..

Mr. Asadullah, wishing you all the success in the coming election. Your determination to achieve education and the struggle you come across your life is commendable. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was selling news papers during his early days in Rameshwaram. You one added one more pages to stories of hardship of life which inspires many more youngsters.

Your vision is very good, need proper strategy to fulfill your dream, without a strong political platform survival in current political scenario is very difficult. Many independent candidate contested last elections in Mumbai, Bengalure and other parts of our country, they all lost, even though, they come from wealthy family. I am not discouraging you, but better to find a reasonably less corrupt party.

    Good luck.

It is very good news. Come on, the young blood, come forward and join politics. Voice your ideas and change the old system. We want more vibrant young leaders to bring a change in the political system of this region.
People of Udupi should give this youngster a chance because he had seen poverty and struggling in his upbringing. He fought and overcame all odds. I wish him good luck!

If your intentions to contest is a honest one its good youngsters like you want to serve the society Mr Asadulla Katpady. But looking at todays's situation, its not easy for you get support unless you are associated with any main Party. The society is already divded now on communal lines thanks to our politicians, that it might take some time for the other community people to accept you. Infact JPH had a absolute chance of better win if he had contested as independent than representign the so called 4% secular party.

You contesting the election will only bring a sense of satisfaction to people like Ismail Perinje to find reason if in case JPH looses this time (which is unlikly, thanx to BJP's dirty lenin) that you splitted the votes, else Congress is the only NATION SAVING PARTY. Good luck, but you have to start for rootlevel to come into politics or you should have, money, muscle or people power which is the hard truth.

Although your opinion is well intended, it seems you have formed the opinion after being brainwashed by communal elements. Asadullah is standing as an Indian Citizen, it is easy to give advice to clear ones home before venturing out. If that was the case most of the leaders should stay at home. The whole world is our home, all are brothers and sisters. Those who do not want others to succeed, try to express their hurt by voicing defeatist / communal / regional lines.

This is another way of distracting people or trying to project himself in the limelight, the best and cheap way of getting publicity. Whatever votes he is going to get is not for him but by mistake, this is the platform for him to get publicity looks decent but cheap. Sorry for him chosing negative publicity method.

Looking at his profile, he is the promising candidate to become people representative. But he has to start from “Level One” i.e. let him context the Punchayat Level Election first, so that he will be known to people very well. Since he doesn’t have money or muscle power, he has to canvass by personally visiting each & every houses to ask for vote. Since he is a Muslim by religion, it is not an easy task to get the vote from other religion too. But we have a tradition in our Coastal Area that even if you are belongs to minority religion, by virtue of good work at local level people still tend to choose them as their representative too. If he can associate with any known Political Party, he will get a catapult step further because some time in our Coastal Area, people tend to vote for Party rather than looking at candidate too.

Its not the right time to contest election by this young lad. Instead he should have worked to strenghten the hands of JPH to defeat communual forces which are the enemies of civilised society.

He should have joined a major political party to come to prominense. This time he is there to spoil the votes and to give ahelping hand to communual forces.

All: No one will vote for this guy except few of his friends and relatives i hope so. The people who are commenting for him won't vote for him in the actual elections. This is the future of india. Without the strongs national party supporting such candidate and winning or getting more than 1000 votes against such parties is impossible here in india. Sorry Asadulla Katpady for demotivating you. I hope you also know this. and Definitely by opting to contenst in election you did a great work. Hats off to you
