Gondia, Mar 12: One person was killed and nine others sustained serious injuries after a private bus carrying wedding guests met with an accident near Karanja in Maharashtra’s Gondia district early on Wednesday morning.
According to police, the accident occurred when the driver of the speeding bus lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle. The bus veered off the road and rammed into bushes and trees along the roadside, severely damaging the front portion of the vehicle.
The passengers were returning home after attending a wedding ceremony. The wedding party belonged to the Varkhade family from Chopa-Mohadi in Goregaon taluk of Gondia district. They had travelled to Khairlanji Makepar in Balaghat district of neighbouring Madhya Pradesh for the marriage ceremony.

After the function concluded late at night, the group began their return journey. While passing through Karanja near Gondia in the early hours, the driver reportedly lost control of the bus while overtaking, causing the vehicle to plunge into a forested area beside the road. The bus continued crashing into several trees and bushes and moved a few kilometres inside before coming to a halt.
During the incident, the driver jumped out of the bus to save himself and fled from the spot. Police have launched a search and initiated an investigation into the incident.
In the accident, Sonu Ghanshyam Uike (27), a resident of Wadi in Nagpur, who was seated in the front portion of the bus, died on the spot after sustaining severe injuries.
Following the crash, local residents rushed to the spot and rescued several injured passengers by pulling them out through the bus windows. The injured were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Officials said the bus sustained major damage after hitting multiple trees, leaving several passengers critically injured. Police have registered a case and further investigation into the accident is underway.
