Central railway to run 100 AC local trips as summer heat intensifies

Mumbai, Mar 17: In relief to commuters battling intense summer heat, Central Railway is set to increase the number of air-conditioned (AC) local train services to 100 trips. A new AC local train will soon be added to the fleet, enabling 12 to 14 additional services on the main line.

With rising temperatures being felt across Mumbai since early March, daily travel has become increasingly uncomfortable for passengers. The heat has also led to a surge in demand for drinking water and cooling beverages at railway stations, as commuters struggle to cope with the harsh conditions, especially during afternoon hours.

Central Railway had placed a demand with Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF) for a new AC local train, which is expected to arrive in Mumbai by the end of April. Once operational, AC locals will run between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Kalyan, replacing some existing non-AC services. The updated timetable is expected to be announced soon, officials said.

At present, AC local trains operate on the main line as well as the harbour line between CSMT and Panvel. Central Railway currently has seven AC local trains, running a total of 94 trips. With the addition of the new train, the number of AC services is expected to cross 100.

Earlier, Western Railway had also increased 12 AC local services in February, taking its total to 133 trips.

Meanwhile, passengers have welcomed the move but raised concerns over delays and cancellations. Regular commuter Ganesh Karve said AC locals often run late on the CSMT–Kalyan and CSMT–Panvel routes, and announcements regarding cancellations are not made in time. He pointed out that passengers who purchase AC tickets face financial loss if services are cancelled.

With rising temperatures, crowding in AC locals has increased compared to first-class compartments. Passengers have also complained about ticketless travel, causing inconvenience to those holding valid AC tickets and passes. There have been demands for stricter ticket checking drives, especially during afternoon hours.
