Madikeri, Apr 7: In the wake of a Kerala woman going missing for four days while on a solo trek, the Kodagu division forest department has temporarily closed the Tadiandamol trekking trail. The closure will remain in effect until April 11, as authorities implement precautionary measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Madikeri Deputy Conservator of Forests, Abhishek, said the department will undertake proper trail markings and strengthen safety protocols. “While trails like Kumara Parvatha already have visible paths, Tadiandamol requires additional precautions due to its dense forest coverage,” he added.

The district administration has also directed trekking organisations from Bengaluru and other cities to strictly adhere to safety guidelines.
Experienced trekkers caution against solo treks:
Meghna Kushalappa, co-founder of Trek n Tales, advised, “No one, no matter how experienced, should attempt a solo trek on a new trail. Trekkers must research the route, physically mark the path, and carry essentials like a flashlight, extra water, snacks, whistle, portable charger, and first aid kit.” She also suggested mobile applications like Wiki Loc, Maps.me, and Strava for navigation.
Trekking group KA 12 Miles has made several demands to authorities:
• Installation of caution/danger boards and signboards at deviations.
• Emergency communication stations, rest shelters, and backup rescue teams.
• Availability of healthcare facilities at base camps.
• Introduction of eco-toilets and strict waste management.
• Ban on solo trekkers in wildlife-prone areas.
• Imposition of heavy penalties for breaking trekking rules.
• Ensuring all treks are plastic-free with stricter monitoring at check posts.
The forest department, along with local trekking organisations, is working to make trekking in Kodagu both safe and sustainable, ensuring adventure tourism continues without compromising the safety of trekkers.
