Priyanka Gandhi criticises women’s bill, says it threatens democratic representation

New Delhi, Apr 16: Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Thursday voiced strong opposition to the current form of the women’s reservation bill, stating that while the Congress supports women’s reservation, the proposed legislation could undermine democracy.

Speaking during a special session of Parliament, Gandhi said there should be no doubt about the party’s commitment to empowering women, but argued that the bill, in its present form, does not genuinely address women’s representation.

Her remarks came in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s earlier address defending the bill.

Gandhi alleged that the Centre’s approach, including reliance on the 2011 Census data and the absence of a caste census, could adversely impact the representation of Other Backward Classes (OBCs).

“The government wants to take away the rights of OBCs. If this bill is passed, it will weaken democracy in the country,” she said.

The debate over the women’s reservation bill continues to intensify, with opposition parties raising concerns over representation and implementation aspects of the proposed legislation.
