Scorching heat and humidity grip Mangaluru, disrupting daily life

Mangaluru, Apr 26: Mangaluru is currently witnessing intense summer conditions; rising temperatures and persistent humidity are making daily life increasingly uncomfortable for residents across the coastal city. Although the region is known for its moderate climate, the combination of heat and moisture in the air has significantly raised discomfort levels, with many describing the weather as unusually harsh this season.

During the daytime, temperatures hover in the early 30s degrees Celsius, but high humidity levels make it feel much hotter than recorded. The coastal climate, which typically brings some relief through sea breeze, has instead contributed to a sticky and exhausting atmosphere, particularly during the afternoon hours. As a result, movement in busy areas has reduced, and people are avoiding outdoor activities between late morning and evening.

The impact of the heat is clearly visible on daily life. Street vendors, construction workers, and others engaged in outdoor occupations are among the worst affected, as prolonged sun exposure has led to fatigue and health concerns. Doctors have reported a rise in cases of dehydration, dizziness, and heat exhaustion, especially among children and the elderly. Many residents have also complained of sleep disturbances due to warm and humid nights, adding to the overall discomfort.

The situation has also led to an increase in electricity consumption, with households relying heavily on fans and air-conditioning systems to cope with the heat. In some areas, concerns over water availability have started to emerge, while nearby rural regions are experiencing stress on crops due to the prolonged dry spell.

Residents across Mangaluru say that the heat feels more intense compared to previous years, largely due to the high humidity that makes even simple tasks exhausting. Many have adapted by staying indoors during peak hours, increasing fluid intake, and opting for light clothing to stay cool.

Weather experts indicate that while occasional pre-monsoon showers may bring temporary relief in the coming weeks, the hot and humid conditions are expected to persist until the monsoon arrives. Until then, authorities and health officials advise people to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

As the city continues to battle rising temperatures, the current weather serves as a reminder of the growing challenges posed by extreme climatic conditions, affecting not just comfort but also health, livelihoods, and everyday routines.
