New Delhi, Apr 26: A major safety scare unfolded at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport early Sunday after smoke was detected from the landing gear of a Zurich-bound Swiss International Airlines aircraft, prompting an emergency evacuation.
According to officials, the incident occurred around 2 am when the aircraft was preparing for takeoff. A full emergency was declared, and multiple fire tenders were rushed to the spot.
The flight, identified as LX 147 from Delhi to Zurich, had 232 passengers and 13 crew members onboard. The aircraft involved was an Airbus A330-343.

Airport authorities said all safety protocols were immediately activated and passengers were safely evacuated. Operations at the airport remained unaffected.
In a statement, the airline said the crew aborted takeoff after noticing a technical issue.
“Shortly after takeoff clearance, an issue occurred with one of the engines. The crew rejected the takeoff and, as a precaution, decided to evacuate the aircraft,” a spokesperson said.
Passengers and crew exited the aircraft using emergency slides, while stairs were arranged for a few individuals who could not use the slides.
At least six passengers sustained minor injuries during the evacuation and are currently undergoing medical evaluation.
The airline said technical experts from Switzerland will travel to Delhi to inspect the aircraft and determine further action.
Authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident.
