Kolkata, Apr 26: Acting on directives from the Election Commission of India (ECI), police in Diamond Harbour have registered an FIR following allegations of voter intimidation in the region.
The Commission received complaints from the Kakdwip area, where a motorcycle rally allegedly raised threatening slogans aimed at voters. It was reported that individuals participating in the procession attempted to instill fear among residents ahead of the ongoing election process.

Responding swiftly, authorities were instructed to take immediate action, leading to the filing of a case at the local police station within hours. Officials confirmed that the FIR includes charges related to criminal intimidation, issuing threats, disturbing public order, and obstructing official duties.
According to the complaint, those involved in the rally openly warned voters of consequences after May 4, the date scheduled for vote counting, raising concerns about attempts to influence voter behavior.
The ECI has reiterated its commitment to ensuring free and fair elections and has taken multiple measures to safeguard voters from coercion. While the first phase of polling on April 23 passed largely without incident, efforts are being intensified to maintain peace during the upcoming phase.
In a separate development, the Commission recently suspended five police officials, including senior officers in the Diamond Harbour subdivision, citing serious breaches of conduct and lack of neutrality. The matter was also communicated to the state administration for further action.
The Diamond Harbour constituency, represented by Abhishek Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress, remains under close watch as authorities work to ensure a smooth and fair electoral process across its seven Assembly segments.
