Udupi, May 2: Even after more than three decades since its establishment, Indrali Railway Station continues to struggle with a lack of basic infrastructure, causing daily inconvenience to thousands of passengers who rely on the station.
Serving as a key transit point in the region, the station witnesses heavy footfall every day, which rises significantly during holidays and vacation seasons. However, the absence of essential facilities, particularly a proper parking system, has become a major concern for commuters.

The parking area at the station remains in a neglected condition. With no proper concrete flooring, the space is overrun by overgrown grass and scattered dry leaves, making it unsuitable for regular use. The situation worsens during the monsoon season, when the entire area gets waterlogged due to the absence of an effective rainwater drainage system. The stagnant water turns the ground into slush, creating difficulties for passengers to park or retrieve their vehicles.
Despite these shortcomings, parking fees are being collected from passengers, with charges varying based on the type of vehicle. This has drawn criticism from commuters, who question the justification for collecting fees without providing even basic amenities.
Security is another pressing issue. Passengers who leave their vehicles at the station for extended periods often express concern over safety, as there is no proper security arrangement in place. The lack of surveillance or personnel increases the risk of vehicle theft or damage, adding to commuter anxiety.
Additionally, the parking area is poorly lit, with inadequate street lighting posing a safety risk during night hours. Passengers have raised concerns about visibility and personal safety, especially for those arriving or departing late in the evening.
In 2024, during an inspection visit, Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna had acknowledged these issues and stated that Indrali Railway Station in Udupi was identified for upgradation under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. He had assured that plans addressing parking, security, and sanitation would be compiled and submitted to the concerned authorities.
While minor improvements, such as the installation of roofing over the foot overbridge, were carried out following media reports, major infrastructure gaps remain unaddressed. This has led to growing frustration among commuters, who are questioning the delay in executing the promised upgrades.
The situation raises a pertinent question: how long will it take for the authorities to implement the much-needed improvements at Indrali Railway Station, even after it has been earmarked for development?
With passenger numbers steadily increasing, the authorities are urged to expedite the upgrade process and ensure that basic facilities are put in place at the earliest. Until then, Indrali Railway Station stands as a reminder of unfulfilled promises and the urgent need for action.
