Washington, May 4: The United States is set to begin a large-scale, military-supported mission to escort commercial vessels through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, amid rising tensions in the region.
President Donald Trump announced the initiative, calling it a humanitarian effort aimed at assisting ships stranded in the narrow waterway. He said several nations had requested help for vessels that were effectively stuck despite having no involvement in the ongoing conflict.

Dubbed “Project Freedom,” the operation will commence Monday morning (Middle East time) and is designed to ensure safe passage for what Trump described as “neutral and innocent” commercial ships. He highlighted concerns over worsening conditions onboard, noting that many vessels are running low on essential supplies needed for large crews.
Trump also pointed to ongoing diplomatic engagement with Iran, expressing optimism about the possibility of a constructive outcome. At the same time, he issued a stern warning that any interference with the mission would be met with force.
The United States Central Command confirmed its role in the operation, stating that forces will be deployed starting May 4 to restore freedom of navigation in one of the world’s most critical maritime trade routes.
The Pentagon-backed mission will include a substantial military presence, with guided-missile destroyers, over 100 aircraft operating across land and sea, advanced unmanned systems, and approximately 15,000 personnel.
Officials emphasized the global importance of the strait, through which roughly a quarter of the world’s seaborne oil trade passes, along with significant quantities of fuel and fertilizer.
Commander of CENTCOM, Brad Cooper, described the operation as vital for maintaining regional stability and protecting the global economy, while also supporting existing naval measures in the area.
In parallel, the US State Department, working with defence authorities, has launched the Maritime Freedom Construct to enhance coordination and information sharing among international partners involved in the effort.
