Tamil Nadu braces for peak summer as ‘Agni Natchathiram’ begins

Chennai, May 4: Tamil Nadu has entered its most intense summer phase, known locally as “Agni Natchathiram” (Kathiri Veyil), beginning Sunday, with officials warning that the severe heat spell is likely to persist until May 28.

Meteorological authorities have forecast a sharp rise in temperatures across the state during this period, with several districts expected to experience conditions close to heatwave levels. The state has already been witnessing steadily rising temperatures since March, with the heat intensifying further in recent weeks.

Officials said maximum temperatures in interior regions could reach up to 43°C, while many areas are already recording highs between 38°C and 40°C, indicating the onset of a prolonged and harsh summer phase.

The Agni Natchathiram period is traditionally considered the hottest stretch of the year in Tamil Nadu, marked by dry air, strong sunlight, and minimal rainfall. Interior districts such as Vellore, Tiruchirappalli, Karur, Erode, and Madurai are expected to be among the worst affected due to intense daytime heating and clear skies.

While coastal regions including Chennai may record slightly lower peak temperatures, high humidity levels are expected to make conditions feel even more uncomfortable.

Weather officials attributed the current conditions to strong solar radiation and persistent clear skies, with no immediate relief expected until pre-monsoon showers arrive later in the month.

In response, authorities have issued public advisories urging residents to take precautions. People have been advised to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours, and wear light, breathable clothing.

Special caution has been recommended for children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions, who are more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. Officials have also advised avoiding outdoor activities between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when temperatures are at their highest.

With the peak summer phase expected to last for more than three weeks, residents have been urged to plan daily activities carefully and minimise exposure to extreme heat conditions.
