AIIMS spine surgery innovation gains global recognition

New Delhi, May 4: A pioneering surgical technique developed at All India Institute of Medical Sciences to treat severe spinal deformities is now gaining international attention, offering new hope to patients with complex and life-altering conditions.

The procedure, a modified version of posterior vertebral column resection (PVCR), was developed by senior orthopaedician Dr Bhavuk Garg. It is designed to correct rigid spinal deformities that were earlier considered extremely high-risk to operate.

A study published in 2020 demonstrated the effectiveness of the modified approach, highlighting that it preserves certain posterior spinal elements until later stages of surgery. This helps improve stability during correction and reduces the likelihood of complications.

Doctors at AIIMS said that over the past seven years, the technique has significantly improved outcomes for patients who previously had limited treatment options. Severe deformity cases often involve twisted spines, breathing difficulties, chronic pain, and inability to stand upright, along with social stigma.

Medical experts noted that earlier surgical methods carried substantial risks, including major neurological damage and life-threatening complications. However, advancements in surgical planning, refined techniques, and growing clinical experience have made the procedure safer and more effective.

Patients who once struggled with basic mobility are now able to return to normal life, including education, work, and daily activities. Families have described the transformation as life-changing, with improvements not just in physical health but also in confidence and dignity.

The innovation has also attracted attention from spine surgeons outside India, further strengthening the country’s reputation in advanced orthopaedic and spinal care.

With consistent success over the years, the AIIMS-developed technique is increasingly being seen as a breakthrough for patients suffering from some of the most severe spinal deformities, offering them a renewed chance at a normal life.
