Srinagar, May 5: The Crime Branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday arrested a government employee for his alleged involvement in a prolonged fraud case linked to forged documents and ?????????? appointments.
According to officials, the arrest was carried out by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) Kashmir in connection with a case registered in 2017. The FIR includes charges of cheating, forgery, and use of fake documents under multiple sections of the erstwhile Ranbir Penal Code.
The accused, identified as Shahnawaz Ahmad Mir, works as a Senior Assistant in the Health Department and is a resident of Tankipora Shaheed Gunj in Srinagar.

The case originated from a report submitted by the Deputy Director of Health Services, Kashmir. It alleged that an individual, Bashir Ahmad Sofi from Budgam’s Mazhama area, had fraudulently obtained a government position as a Health Educator. Investigators found that the appointment was secured using forged transfer orders and a fabricated Last Pay Certificate.
Further inquiry revealed that the individual had unlawfully entered government service in Baramulla’s Block Sheeri and continued to draw a salary, causing financial losses to the state exchequer.
During the investigation, Shahnawaz Ahmad Mir’s role came under scrutiny for allegedly facilitating or being connected to the fraudulent appointment process. Officials have described him as a repeat offender, with links to several similar cases that are either under investigation or already charge-sheeted.
The case has raised serious concerns about lapses in recruitment procedures and document verification within the department. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing to uncover the full scope of the fraud and identify any additional individuals involved.
The Crime Branch, a specialised wing of the J&K Police, handles complex and sensitive cases that require dedicated investigation beyond routine policing.
