Banswara, May 5: A boat carrying 10 people capsized in the Mahi River in Rajasthan’s Banswara district on Tuesday, leaving two persons—including an eight-year-old child—missing.

Officials said eight people, including the boatman, managed to swim to safety after the incident, which occurred around 3 p.m. near Bhaisau village under the Arthuna police station limits. The boat reportedly overturned about 200 metres from the riverbank.

The missing have been identified as 21-year-old Jayesh and eight-year-old Manav. Search operations are currently underway, involving teams from the police, Civil Defence, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

Superintendent of Police Sudhir Joshi confirmed that multiple teams have been deployed and are actively searching the river. Around 10 personnel are conducting the operation using boats, with efforts expected to continue until nightfall.

Local divers, fishermen, and villagers have also joined the search, as authorities intensify efforts to locate both the missing individuals and the submerged boat, which has not yet been recovered.

All passengers were residents of Bhano Ka Pada village and had visited the Sangameshwar Mahadev Temple before the tragedy. The accident occurred during a boating trip after their visit.

Preliminary findings suggest that none of the passengers were wearing life jackets, and overcrowding may have contributed to the incident. The boatman is reported to have fled the scene following the accident.

The accident site is located at a river confluence where the Mahi, Anas, and Jakham rivers meet—an area known for strong currents and fluctuating water levels.

Authorities continue rescue efforts as anxious family members await updates on the missing.
