Chennai, May 6: Actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay on Wednesday formally moved to form the next government in Tamil Nadu after his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, emerged as the single largest force in the 234-member Assembly.
Vijay visited Raj Bhavan and met governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, submitting a formal letter staking claim to form the government. He also assured the governor that the party would demonstrate its majority on the floor of the House within the stipulated time frame.

The meeting, held at Lok Bhavan amid heightened political activity in Chennai, is being seen as the first key constitutional step toward installing a TVK-led government.
Vijay was accompanied by senior party leaders including ‘Bussy’ Anand, K.A. Sengottaiyan, Aadhav Arjuna, and Arun Raj during the crucial discussions.
The development follows a remarkable electoral debut for TVK, which secured 108 seats in the recently concluded Assembly elections, becoming the largest single party. However, it fell short of the 118-seat majority mark required to govern independently.
In the aftermath of the results, Vijay held a series of consultations with newly elected MLAs and senior leaders. On Tuesday, the TVK legislature party unanimously elected him as its leader, formally clearing the path for him to approach the governor.
Meanwhile, political negotiations continue in the state capital as various parties reassess their positions in the hung Assembly scenario. The Indian National Congress has extended conditional support to TVK, while Left parties and smaller regional groups are expected to decide their stance after internal discussions.
The outgoing ruling party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which suffered a significant setback in the polls, has begun internal consultations following the loss of power after a single term.
With coalition dynamics still unfolding, political observers say the coming days will be decisive in determining whether Vijay can successfully convert TVK’s electoral surge into a stable governing majority.
