Kolkata, May 6: Authorities in West Bengal have registered 200 FIRs and made 433 arrests in connection with post-election violence since the Assembly results were declared on May 4, Director General of Police Siddh Nath Gupta said on Wednesday.
In addition to those arrested for direct involvement, around 1,100 individuals have been placed under preventive detention as part of efforts to maintain law and order across the state.
The update comes a day after the Election Commission of India instructed state authorities and deployed central forces to adopt a zero-tolerance approach toward post-poll violence.

The DGP also addressed changes in security arrangements for outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee. He clarified that while both continue to receive mandated security cover as per protocol, some additional personnel previously assigned to them have been withdrawn and redeployed for general law and order duties.
Appealing for calm, Gupta urged citizens not to take matters into their own hands. He advised those with grievances to approach the police and assured that authorities would act even in cases where formal complaints are not filed, by registering cases suo motu if necessary.
As part of ongoing security measures, 500 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces remain stationed in the state. Their deployment will continue until further directions from the Election Commission.
