Chennai, May 6: The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Indian National Congress for extending support to C. Joseph Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, in the evolving post-election political scenario in Tamil Nadu.
In a strongly worded statement, DMK treasurer T. R. Baalu accused the Congress of betraying the mandate of voters who had backed the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) led by the DMK.
Baalu said the Congress decision had exposed what he described as the party’s “true nature,” alleging that it had abandoned a long-standing alliance at a crucial moment. He recalled that the DMK had consistently stood by the Congress during challenging times, even at significant political cost.

Highlighting past ties, Baalu referred to the party’s association with leaders such as Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and Rahul Gandhi. He added that DMK president M. K. Stalin had supported Rahul Gandhi both politically and personally, including backing him as a prime ministerial candidate during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
According to Baalu, the Congress has now effectively shifted its five MLAs to the opposing camp despite contesting elections as part of the DMK-led alliance. He described the move as “opportunistic” and a betrayal of public trust.
“The attempt to justify this shift under the guise of policy is unconvincing. Voters supported the alliance with the expectation of a DMK-led government,” he said.
Drawing parallels with the Bharatiya Janata Party, Baalu alleged that the Congress was adopting similar tactics to gain power through indirect means.
While acknowledging that parties are free to make political choices, he stressed that ethical politics requires respecting the electorate’s mandate. Despite the development, Baalu maintained that the DMK would continue its political course, adding that the consequences of such decisions would become clear over time.
