Bantwal, May 11: The significant drop in the water level of the Netravati river, the lifeline of Dakshina Kannada district, has triggered widespread concern. With soaring temperatures, there is a looming threat of further depletion of the river's water reserves.
The riverbed from the downstream of the Jakribettu dam in Bantwal up to the new Panemangalore bridge has almost completely dried up, leaving sand and rocks exposed. Although the taluk has not yet faced a severe drinking water crisis, Bantwal MLA Rajesh Naik Ulipadiguthu has instructed officials to remain highly vigilant regarding water supply and usage.

Taking precautionary measures to ensure that Mangaluru city does not face a drinking water shortage, the deputy commissioner (DC) has issued a crucial administrative order. The DC has directed the release of water from the AMR dam to the Thumbe dam, while explicitly instructing that the available water be strictly reserved for drinking purposes and not utilized for other activities.
Key highlights of the DC's order:
-
Thumbe dam status: Mangaluru city receives its drinking water supply from the Thumbe vented dam across the Netravati river, which has a maximum storage capacity of 10.41 MCM.
-
Current water levels: As of April 21, 2026, the water level at the Thumbe dam stood at 4.71 meters, while the AMR dam recorded a level of 18.62 meters. This available water is estimated to be sufficient for Mangaluru city for approximately 22 days.
-
Water release directive: To avert a severe summer crisis, instructions have been given to release water from the AMR dam to the Thumbe dam up to the 6-meter mark.
-
Priority storage: The plant manager has been directed to halt the usage of AMR dam water for other purposes and prioritize its storage exclusively for drinking water needs.
-
Immediate action: The executive engineer of the minor irrigation department and AMR Power Pvt Ltd have been instructed to execute the order immediately and submit a compliance report.
This proactive measure has been taken in the public interest following a proposal submitted by the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC). Authorities have earnestly appealed to the public to use water judiciously and cooperate during this crucial summer period.
