Washington, May 12: US President Donald Trump welcomed the national champion Indiana Hoosiers football to the White House, celebrating the programme’s remarkable unbeaten title-winning season and calling it a “legendary story.”
During the ceremony attended by players, university officials, and lawmakers from Indiana, Trump praised head coach Curt Cignetti for rapidly transforming the team into a dominant force in college football.
Describing Cignetti as “the coach of the last decade,” Trump highlighted the dramatic turnaround achieved under his leadership.

“He inherited something that was less than great, and he made it into something extraordinary,” Trump said, noting that the transformation was unprecedented at the college level.
The President also recalled Cignetti’s confident statement when he took charge of the programme in 2023: “I win. I just know how to win.” Trump pointed out that within just two years, the coach had guided the Hoosiers to a national championship.
The Hoosiers completed a perfect 16-0 campaign and secured major victories over powerhouse teams including the Ohio State Buckeyes football, Alabama Crimson Tide football, and Oregon Ducks football during their title run.
Trump repeatedly praised the squad’s determination, discipline, and resilience throughout the season.
“This team lifted the Indiana football programme from a historic low,” he said. “Your grit, discipline, and belief made this an incredible story.”
The President also mentioned quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who could not attend the ceremony because he had joined training camp with the Las Vegas Raiders.
“He’s a winner, and I think he’s going to do great,” Trump said.
Speaking at the event, Cignetti credited the university leadership and players for the programme’s success, emphasising the importance of strong institutional support.
“You’ve got to have commitment at the top,” he said. “Without that commitment, nothing is possible.”
The coach described the season as one of the greatest achievements in college football history, highlighting victories over six top-10 teams.
Defensive back Jamari Sharpe briefly addressed the gathering after being invited to the podium by Trump.
“Coach Cigs is a very good coach,” Sharpe said. “I stayed, and I’m glad I stayed because we won a national championship.”
Wide receiver Charlie Becker thanked the President and called the White House visit a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the team.
At the conclusion of the event, Trump invited players to tour the Oval Office and presented them with commemorative medals while sharing light-hearted moments with the championship squad.
