Mangaluru, May 12: Despite the intense summer heat prevailing across the coastal region, the house listing and enumeration process under the Mangaluru taluk panchayat limits has been completed 100 per cent. Significantly, the large-scale census exercise, being conducted after a gap of 15 years, has revealed a higher number of houses than those recorded in government records.
The house listing and house enumeration process, which began on April 16, progressed rapidly in rural areas. Enumeration has been completed in all 236 house listing blocks under the Mangaluru taluk panchayat jurisdiction.

According to earlier government records, there were 33,273 houses in the rural areas. However, the latest enumeration has recorded an increase to 33,719 houses. Enumeration has also been completed in all 53 blocks of Bajpe, where the number of houses has risen from 4,437 to 5,324. The population in the area has also increased from 20,681 to 22,924.
The enumeration work within the limits of the Mangaluru City Corporation is still in progress. Although corporation officials had estimated that the city’s population could cross 6.5 lac, the work has currently been completed in 743 out of 875 blocks, accounting for 84.9 per cent progress.
While the population stood at 5.21 lac during the 2011 census, it has now reached 5.74 lac. However, officials believe that even after the completion of the census, crossing the 6 lac mark may be unlikely.
The district administration has made systematic preparations to conduct the census smoothly across Dakshina Kannada district. A total of 35 charges have been created, with 23 charge officers appointed in taluks and 12 in the corporation limits.
Altogether 2,392 personnel, including enumerators and supervisors, have been engaged in the exercise. A total of 351 supervisors have been appointed, with one supervisor for every six enumerators, ensuring smooth and confusion-free operations.
Officials have set a deadline of three days to complete the remaining 15 per cent of work within the Mangaluru City Corporation limits.
“Targets have been successfully achieved in the rural and Bajpe areas. Though there has been a minor delay in the city limits, the census work will be completed 100 per cent within the next three days,” said T Ramesh Babu, tahsildar of Mangaluru.
