Mangaluru/Udupi, May 13: The coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Kasargod experienced unseasonal showers accompanied by thunder, lightning, and strong winds on May 12. While the rain brought a brief respite from the sweltering heat, it also resulted in power outages and property damage in several areas.
In Mangaluru city, a good spell of rain was reported during the night. Several other parts of Dakshina Kannada, including Beltangady, Venur, Ujire, Shirlalu, Guripalla, Sullia, Nintikallu, Aivarnadu, Bellare, Bantwal, and Puttur, also witnessed rain. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 34.8°C and a minimum of 25.1°C on Tuesday. After a cloudy morning, the weather had turned hot and humid before the evening showers. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms and rain across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts for the next three days.

Rain lashes Udupi, Kasargod, and Bantwal
Udupi city and its surrounding areas experienced heavy rain, gusty winds, and lightning starting around 9:30 pm on Tuesday, which continued late into the night. The sudden downpour led to immediate power disruptions in the region.
Similarly, in Bantwal taluk, a slight drizzle in the evening escalated into heavy rain with thunderstorms and strong winds by 9:30 pm, causing power failures in multiple locations, including BC Road. In Kasargod, moderate rain was reported for a brief period on Tuesday evening in Kasargod city and Manjeshwar.
Damages reported in Moodbidri
Moderate rain accompanied by fierce winds wreaked havoc in several parts of Moodbidri on Tuesday evening. The roof tiles of the Thakode post office were blown off, causing rainwater to flood the premises. However, a major disaster was averted, and important documents remained safe, as the office was closed for a half-day holiday.
In Maroor village, the wind and rain damaged two houses. The roof of a house belonging to Vanitha was completely blown away, while an uprooted tree fell on the house of Shashikala, causing partial damage. Revenue officials visited the affected sites to conduct an inspection and assess the loss.
Lightning strikes houses in Karkala
In Karkala taluk, the intensity of the wind and thunderstorms continued. Late Monday night, lightning struck two houses, causing significant financial loss. A house belonging to Rohini Sundar Poojary in Edu village suffered damages estimated at Rs 35,000, while another house owned by Jaya Salian in Mundkur village incurred a loss of approximately Rs 50,000.
On Tuesday, intermittent moderate rain with thunderstorms was reported in Mala, Mundkur, Hiriyangadi, Bailur, Hosamaru, Edu, Kervashe, and parts of Muniyal in Hebri taluk. Following an overcast afternoon, the evening saw varying intensities of rainfall, leading to power outages in several pockets. The region recorded 3.7 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Tuesday.
