New Delhi, May 14: The Central Government has extended the tenure of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Praveen Sood by one more year, marking his second extension in office.
The extension beyond May 24, 2026, was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) following recommendations of the selection committee, according to an order issued by the Personnel Ministry.
Praveen Sood, a senior IPS officer of the 1986 batch from the Karnataka cadre, took charge as CBI Director on May 25, 2023, for a two-year term. He had earlier received a one-year extension before the latest decision.

Officials said the decision was taken after a meeting of the selection committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.
Meanwhile, reports said Rahul Gandhi expressed strong dissent during the meeting over the selection process and stated that he did not wish to be part of what he termed a “biased exercise.”
