Lucknow, May 14: At least 74 people lost their lives and hundreds were injured after a powerful storm accompanied by heavy rain and hail lashed several parts of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, leaving widespread destruction across the state.
The sudden storm, with wind speeds reportedly reaching up to 100 kmph, uprooted trees, damaged houses, brought down electricity poles and disrupted normal life in dozens of districts.

Prayagraj emerged as the worst-affected district, recording 17 deaths across five tehsils. Officials said the victims included five women, four children and eight men. The storm also killed around 20 livestock and damaged at least 16 houses in the district.
Several tragic incidents were reported from different parts of the state. In Unnao, a 70-year-old farmer, identified as Ram Ashray, died after being crushed by a falling mango tree. In another incident, nine-year-old Ansh lost his life when a eucalyptus tree collapsed in Asiwan.
Other severely affected districts included Bhadohi, where 10 people died, Fatehpur with eight deaths, and Badaun with six fatalities.
The storm caused massive disruption to electricity supply after hundreds of power poles and trees were uprooted. Roads were blocked in many areas, vehicles were damaged and several localities remained cut off immediately after the storm.
The India Meteorological Department has issued a Yellow Alert for 38 districts, including Lucknow, Prayagraj, Jaunpur and Banda, warning of continued heavy rainfall, lightning and strong winds reaching up to 60 kmph in the coming hours. Residents have been advised to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s Office has directed district administrations to speed up relief and rescue operations and ensure immediate compensation to the families of victims.
Meanwhile, weather officials have warned that another challenge may follow the storm, with temperatures expected to rise sharply from May 15. Forecasts indicate that mercury levels could increase by 6 to 8 degrees Celsius, potentially crossing 45°C in several districts.
