New Delhi, May 21: India’s tea exports have nearly doubled over the last decade, registering a strong growth of 93 per cent, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Thursday.
According to the minister, the value of India’s tea exports increased from Rs 4,509 crore in FY2013-14 to Rs 8,719 crore in FY2025-26, reflecting the growing international demand for Indian tea.
Marking International Tea Day, Goyal described tea as an integral part of Indian culture and everyday life, saying the beverage carries emotional and cultural significance across the country.

“Tea is more than just a drink in India — it is a part of our conversations, traditions and daily routine,” the minister wrote in a post on social media platform X.
He highlighted the diversity of Indian tea, mentioning renowned tea-producing regions such as Darjeeling, Assam and the Nilgiri Hills, each known for its unique flavour, aroma and character.
Goyal noted that Indian tea has steadily expanded its footprint in international markets over the years, driven by higher quality standards and promotional efforts undertaken by the Tea Board of India.
He said continuous efforts to showcase India’s rich tea heritage globally have helped strengthen the country’s export performance and enhance the global reputation of Indian tea.
The minister also underlined the crucial contribution of women to the tea industry. Referring to earlier data shared in 2025, he said the organised tea sector in India provides employment to nearly 12 lakh workers, of whom around 58 per cent are women.
“Women are leading the growth of India’s tea sector. India continues to make its presence felt globally through its aromatic teas and rising exports,” Goyal had earlier stated.
According to official DGCIS data, India exported 263 million kilograms of tea during FY25, generating export earnings of Rs 7,818 crore.
