Udupi, Jun 8: The Young Catholic Students (YCS) Moodubelle Unit, in collaboration with YUVA AAYOG of St Lawrence Church, Moodubelle, organized an orientation programme for new members and their parents, followed by a farewell programme for outgoing members, on Sunday, June 7.
Addressing the gathering, CA Pritesh Burton D’Sa emphasized the importance of keeping Christ at the centre of life and cultivating gratitude towards God. He remarked that while material success may provide comfort, true happiness stems from a life rooted in faith and values. Referring to a message frequently shared by Fr George Thomas D’Souza, he noted that the priest’s aspiration is to see Christian youth excel in their chosen fields through dedication, hard work, and strong moral values.

In his presidential address, Fr George Thomas D’Souza reiterated his vision of nurturing Catholic youth to become leaders in education, professional life, and service while remaining firmly grounded in Christian principles.
Leslie Aroza, chief guest of the event, delivered an insightful session on the vision, mission, and significance of YCS in shaping the faith and character of young people. He explained the origins of the movement, its growth in India, and its unique identity in comparison to ICYM.
Highlighting challenges faced by modern youth, including peer pressure, emotional and mental health concerns, and the influence of the digital world, he encouraged young people to remain rooted in faith and values while making responsible life choices.
Addressing parents, he stressed the importance of guiding children in choosing suitable career paths rather than imposing decisions upon them. Through practical examples, he underscored the need to understand a child’s interests and abilities and encouraged parents to foster open communication and trust. He also urged them to actively support their children’s participation in YCS activities, emphasizing that holistic development extends beyond academic achievement.
The orientation session introduced participants to the YCS motto, vision, mission, and its core methodology of ‘See, Judge and Act.’ The session highlighted the role of YCS in nurturing faith, leadership, social responsibility, and service among young people, thereby contributing to the building of a better society and the Kingdom of God.
As a token of appreciation, Fr George Thomas D’Souza presented a memento to the resource person. Following the orientation session, the farewell programme for the outgoing members commenced.
Jane Genelia Alva, a second-year YCS member, shared her experiences in the movement and reflected on how YCS had helped her develop confidence, leadership qualities, and personal growth by encouraging her to step beyond her comfort zone.
The outgoing members were honoured with certificates and mementos presented by Fr Stephen Rodrigues in recognition of their dedication and valuable contributions to the movement. First-year members added a special touch to the celebration by preparing handmade crafts and creative artwork. As a symbol of unity and cherished memories, all participants contributed their thumbprints to a commemorative frame.
The event witnessed the presence of Leslie Aroza, director of the Family Commission of the Udupi diocese; Fr George Thomas D’Souza, director of YCS Moodubelle Unit; Fr Stephen Rodrigues, assistant director; Deacon Shawn Savio Andrade; CA Pritesh Burton D’Sa, vice president of the Parish Pastoral Council; Jyothi D’Souza; Dr Judith Noronha, youth coordinator; and Loy Fernandes, ICYM president.
The orientation and farewell programme served as a meaningful beginning to the YCS year 2026–27, strengthening the spirit of faith, fellowship, leadership, and service among the young members of the parish.
The programme began with a prayer hymn led by Johan Aranha, Jane Rebello, and Raizel Furtado. The gathering was warmly welcomed by YCS Unit president Melson Elvis Lobo. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Rishal Mascarenhas.
The event was coordinated by YCS animators Dr Judith Noronha and Nikita Rebello. Vinola Moras compered the event.
