Udupi, Jun 26: In view of the threat of landslides triggered by heavy rainfall and continuous movement of heavy vehicles, Udupi Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa T.K. has prohibited the movement of heavy vehicles through the Agumbe Ghat stretch on National Highway 169A (Thirthahalli–Malpe Road) till September 30.

According to an official order, only light motor vehicles will be allowed to use the ghat section during this period as a precautionary measure.

Heavy vehicles travelling from Thirthahalli towards Udupi have been directed to take the Thirthahalli–Kundapur–Udupi route.

Similarly, heavy vehicles proceeding from Chikkamagaluru to Udupi must travel via Balehonnur–Magundi–Kalasa–Kudremukh–S.K. Border.

Vehicles coming from Narasimharajapura towards Udupi have been instructed to use the Koppa–Jayapura–Balehole–Kalasa–Kudremukh–S K Border route.

The restrictions have been imposed to ensure public safety following the possibility of landslides along vulnerable stretches of the Agumbe Ghat during the monsoon season, the deputy commissioner's office said in a statement.
