Bengaluru, Jul 4: The Karnataka government is formulating the Coastal–Malnad Karnataka Tourism Policy–2026 to give fresh impetus to tourism in the state's coastal and Malnad regions and position Karnataka as one of the country's leading tourism destinations, Energy and Tourism minister K J George said on Friday.

Chairing a review meeting with senior Tourism Department officials at Vidhana Soudha to assess the progress of various departmental projects, the minister held detailed discussions on long-term strategies to elevate Karnataka's tourism sector.

The proposed tourism policy aims to comprehensively develop the tourism potential of the six districts falling under the coastal and Malnad regions. The minister said the policy should accord priority to theme-based tourism circuits, beach tourism, cruise tourism, adventure sports, and programmes that promote the local economy.

George directed officials to formulate a comprehensive strategy to attract a larger number of international cruise ships to ports across the state, including Mangaluru. He also stressed the need to develop attractive tourism packages and circuits that would encourage cruise passengers to spend more time in Karnataka.

The minister instructed officials to hold consultations with major cruise operators and incorporate necessary changes in the policy based on the expectations of both the operators and tourists.

To further strengthen beach tourism, George said the new policy should include the development of Blue Flag beaches, improved cleanliness and safety measures, creation of essential tourist infrastructure, promotion of water sports and adventure activities, and initiatives aimed at providing a high-quality visitor experience along the state's coastline.

He also directed officials to enhance the tourist experience at destinations managed by the Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) and Jungle Lodges and Resorts (JLR) by expanding quality accommodation, basic amenities, sanitation, information systems, and other essential visitor services.

"Tourism is not merely about developing tourist destinations; it is about creating a comprehensive ecosystem that delivers a world-class experience to visitors. Karnataka can secure a prominent place on the global tourism map only through quality infrastructure, seamless connectivity, safety, and high standards of service," minister K J George said.
