Mangaluru: Lourdes Central School celebrates Vanamahotsava Week 2026

Mangaluru, Jul 8: As part of the Vanamahotsava Week 2026 celebrations, Lourdes Central School conducted a series of wealth out of waste competitions across various classes on July 6, encouraging students to creatively engage in fostering public awareness about the benefits of trees and the negative impacts of deforestation.

As part of the celebrations, a special morning assembly was conducted by grade VIII B to create awareness about the importance of trees and environmental conservation. The programme inspired students to understand their responsibility towards protecting Mother Earth.

The programme was graced by the principal Fr Johnson L Sequeira, the assembly began with the prayer, followed by the Preamble of the constitution. A meaningful Thought for the Day emphasized the importance of living in harmony with nature and protecting the environment for future generations.

The assembly was inaugurated by principal, who officially declared the commencement of the Vanamahotsava celebrations. The significance of Vanamahotsava was explained, highlighting the importance of planting trees, conserving forests, and maintaining ecological balance. Students were reminded that every tree planted today contributes to a greener and healthier tomorrow.

The news headlines kept everyone informed about current national, international, sports, and environmental events.

A thought-provoking skit was presented by the students, conveying the powerful message that every small action matters. The skit encouraged everyone to adopt simple eco-friendly practices such as planting trees, reducing plastic usage, conserving water, and keeping the surroundings clean.

The assembly also featured a special song presentation dedicated to Mother Earth, inspiring everyone to appreciate the beauty of nature and pledge to protect it.

The principal Fr Johnson L Sequeira in his address motivated students to become responsible citizens by planting and nurturing trees. He emphasized that Earth is our second home and reminded everyone that protecting nature is a shared responsibility. He quoted the inspiring message: ‘The Earth doesn't belong to us; we belong to the Earth'.

The various competitions were conducted during the CTP period from 8:25 am to 9:25 am, centered on the theme ‘Nurture Nature: Serving the Earth with Love'.

The festivities commenced with the youngest learners in grade I participating in a finger painting competition themed ‘My Green Tree', which successfully developed their fine motor skills while instilling an early appreciation for nature.

Grade II students expressed their artistic talents through a nature drawing & colouring competition under the theme ‘Happy Garden', fostering keen observational skills and a deep love for the environment.

Progression to grade III saw students collaborating on a nature collage competition titled ‘Trees Are Our Friends', where they utilized natural and eco-friendly materials to learn about teamwork, patience, and the critical role of trees in our ecosystem.

The senior classes focused on sustainability through ‘Best Out of Waste’ initiatives. Grade IV students designed innovative greeting cards themed ‘Nurturing Nature, Serving the Earth with Love', promoting environmental awareness and the creative reuse of discarded items.

The grade V students demonstrated exceptional craftsmanship and problem-solving skills in a craft competition themed ‘Recycle Today, Save Tomorrow', inspiring their peers to adopt responsible, sustainable habits for a greener future.

Continuing this eco-friendly momentum under the unified ‘Wealth Out of Waste’ theme, grade VI students showcased their innovation by crafting intricate greeting cards from discarded materials.

This was followed by grade VII students, who creatively transformed household scrap into stunning decorative wall hangings.

Finally, grade VIII students demonstrated advanced craftsmanship and design skills by engineering beautiful, functional vases from upcycled waste products, proving that discarded items can be reinvented into valuable household treasures.

The Vanamahotsava celebration successfully instilled environmental awareness among students. It encouraged them to develop a love for nature and inspired them to take simple yet meaningful steps towards conserving the environment.
