Mangaluru: Srinivas University organizes hands-on workshop AOTT students

Media Release

Mangaluru, Jul 8: A hands-on workshop on endotracheal intubation and routes of drug administration was conducted on July 4 for the 3rd year BSc Anaesthesia and Operation Theatre Technology (AOTT) students of Srinivas University. The primary objective of the workshop was to strengthen the students' practical competencies in airway management and the safe administration of medications, which are essential skills in perioperative and emergency patient care.

The workshop commenced with an introductory session highlighting the importance of airway management in anesthesia, emergency medicine, and critical care. Students were briefed on the indications, contraindications, equipment required, patient preparation, and safety precautions associated with endotracheal intubation. The faculty also emphasized the significance of proper airway assessment and the role of effective communication and teamwork during airway management.

A live demonstration of orotracheal endotracheal intubation was performed using an airway manikin. The demonstration covered the step-by-step procedure, including patient positioning, preparation of equipment, laryngoscope handling, visualization of the vocal cords, insertion of the endotracheal tube, cuff inflation, confirmation of correct tube placement using clinical methods, and securing the tube. Common errors encountered during intubation and methods to avoid complications were also discussed.

Following the demonstration, students participated in supervised hands-on practice using airway manikins. Each student was given the opportunity to perform endotracheal intubation under the guidance of faculty members, who provided immediate feedback on technique, hand positioning, laryngoscope manipulation, tube insertion, and overall procedural safety. This practical session significantly enhanced the students' psychomotor skills and confidence in performing airway management procedures.

The second part of the workshop focused on the routes of drug administration. Students were introduced to the various routes commonly used in clinical practice, including oral, sublingual, buccal, topical, transdermal, inhalational, rectal, intramuscular, subcutaneous, intradermal, and intravenous routes. Faculty members explained the indications, advantages, limitations, absorption characteristics, and precautions associated with each route. Demonstrations of basic drug administration techniques and the principles of safe medication practices, including the "Five Rights" of medication administration, infection prevention measures, aseptic techniques, and prevention of medication errors, were also discussed.

The workshop was highly interactive, encouraging students to ask questions and clarify their doubts throughout the sessions. Individual guidance and constructive feedback enabled participants to improve both their theoretical understanding and practical performance.

Overall, the workshop proved to be a valuable learning experience, successfully bridging the gap between classroom teaching and clinical practice. It enhanced the students' knowledge, technical skills, confidence, and preparedness to perform essential clinical procedures in anesthesia, operation theatre, emergency, and critical care settings.
