Mangaluru, Jul 13: The Yenepoya Institute of Arts, Science, Commerce and Management (YIASCM), a constituent unit of Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), inaugurated 'Deeksharambh 2026', its student induction and orientation programme, on July 13 at the YMK Auditorium, Kulur Campus.
Scheduled for July 13 to 20, the week-long programme is designed to provide newly admitted students with a comprehensive introduction to university life by familiarising them with the institution's academic environment, values, support systems, and opportunities for holistic development.
The inaugural programme was graced by chief guest Sudheer Kumar Reddy, IPS, commissioner of Police, Mangaluru City, and presided over by Dr K S Gangadhara Somayaji, vice chancellor, Yenepoya (Deemed to be University), with Neha Soni, manager – Industry Solutions (Training), South Asia, International Air Transport Association (IATA), as the guest of honour. Prof Jeevan Raj, principal, YIASCM; Prof Shareena P, vice principal and dean, faculty of Commerce and Management; and Narayan Sukumar A, vice principal, were also present, along with the teaching staff, support staff, and students.

































































































The programme welcomed students admitted to the BBA, BCom., BSc, BCA, BA, B.Des., BHM, and BND programmes, marking the beginning of their academic journey at YIASCM. Deeksharambh 2026 will feature a series of expert lectures, orientation sessions, mentoring programmes, interactive workshops, and student engagement activities over the week. Through this comprehensive induction layout, YIASCM aims to empower its newest students with the knowledge, confidence, values, and skills required to excel academically, grow personally, and contribute meaningfully to society.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by Srijana Shet, assistant professor, Department of Computer Science and Deeksharambh programme coordinator, who welcomed the gathering and introduced the dignitaries. This was followed by a solemn invocation rendered by Saleeth Ahmed, III BA (Communication Design). The chief guest and other dignitaries then lit the ceremonial lamp, symbolising the pursuit of knowledge and the beginning of a new chapter in the students' academic journey.
Chief guest Sudheer Kumar Reddy, IPS, inspired the students by sharing experiences from his personal and professional journey. He emphasised that students aspiring to be among the top one percent in any field must cultivate discipline, dedication, and unwavering commitment.
Referring to the story of the Chinese bamboo tree, he illustrated the importance of patience and perseverance in achieving long-term success, while citing legendary basketball player Kobe Bryant to highlight the value of relentless practice and continuous self-improvement. He encouraged students to set clear short-term goals, remain focused on their aspirations, and surround themselves with positive influences.
Guest of honour Neha Soni highlighted the significance of the IATA curriculum in preparing students for rewarding careers in the aviation and travel industry. She observed that India's aviation sector is witnessing rapid growth, creating a rising demand for skilled professionals across airlines, airports, and allied services. Congratulating the students on joining YIASCM, she encouraged them to take full advantage of the opportunities available, embrace continuous learning, and develop industry-relevant competencies that would enhance their employability.
In his presidential address, Dr K S Gangadhara Somayaji reflected on the remarkable growth and achievements of YIASCM. He remarked that while higher education today offers unprecedented opportunities, academic qualifications must be complemented by integrity, competence, and social responsibility.
Expressing concern over the growing menace of drug abuse among youth, he urged students to make informed choices and strictly adhere to the University's anti-drug policy. He also encouraged active participation in co-curricular and extracurricular activities for holistic development, advising students to uphold the values of morality, humility, and discipline.
Prof Jeevan Raj, principal, YIASCM, welcomed the freshers and highlighted the significance of Deeksharambh in helping students transition smoothly from school to higher education. He described college life as an important phase that offers opportunities to acquire knowledge, develop essential life skills, and prepare for future careers. He highlighted the various student support systems available at YIASCM and encouraged students to actively participate in clubs, NSS, NCC, and other institutional initiatives to develop leadership, teamwork, discipline, and overall personality.
A major highlight of the inaugural programme was the formal launch of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) curriculum in selected academic programmes, an initiative reflecting YIASCM's continued commitment to integrating globally recognised, industry-oriented courses that enhance employability in the aviation and travel sectors.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Dr Shakira Irfana, associate professor, Department of Management, who expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, faculty members, organisers, and students for making the inaugural programme a grand success. The event was compered by Pinakini Shetty, assistant professor, Department of Commerce.
