Mapusa, Jul 14: Two higher secondary students from Colvale were admitted to the North Goa District Hospital in Mapusa on Monday after they reportedly consumed five iron and folic acid (IFA) tablets each instead of the prescribed single tablet under a school health programme.

According to sources, the students were administered IFA tablets as part of the government's weekly supplementation programme for adolescents. However, they allegedly consumed five tablets each instead of the recommended dosage.

Soon after, the students complained of vomiting and uneasiness and were immediately shifted to the district hospital in Mapusa for treatment and observation.

Hospital sources said both students are in stable condition and are responding well to treatment. Doctors are monitoring them as a precaution, and no serious complications have been reported.

"The students were brought to the hospital after they developed vomiting and discomfort. They are stable and under observation, and there is no cause for panic at present," a hospital official said.

Health and education authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances under which the students consumed the excess tablets and ascertain whether the prescribed protocol for administering the supplements was followed.

Officials are also expected to counsel students and school staff on the proper administration of iron and folic acid tablets to prevent similar incidents in the future.
