Mangaluru, Jul 17: Passengers aboard the Mumbai–Mangaluru Express overpowered a youth who allegedly attempted to rob passengers by threatening them with a knife and later handed him over to the Goa police.

The incident occurred between Karmali railway station in Maharashtra and a railway station in Goa. On Thursday, the youth was seen moving suspiciously inside the train. When railway ticket collector Laxman Pawar attempted to question him, the suspect suddenly started running through the coach.

Passengers travelling to Mangaluru, including Nagaraj Poojary from Kundapur, along with fellow passengers Vadiraj Surathkal and Manjunath Shanthi, chased and caught the youth.

The suspect then pulled out a knife from his pocket and threatened the passengers with dire consequences. However, the alert passengers managed to overpower him after a struggle and snatched the knife from his hand. Railway staff subsequently handed the accused over to the Goa Police.

After being caught, the passengers questioned the youth, who reportedly revealed that he was from Mumbra in Mumbai. He was also allegedly assaulted by the passengers before being questioned.

According to the information gathered, the youth was part of a six-member gang. The other five members, who were in different coaches, fled immediately after the incident. The gang is reportedly active on both the Mumbai–Mangaluru Express and the Matsyagandha Express.
