New Delhi, Jul 22: While the monsoon offers respite from scorching summer temperatures, it can also bring increased joint pain and stiffness for people living with arthritis. Orthopaedic experts say changes in humidity, atmospheric pressure and reduced physical activity during the rainy season can aggravate existing joint conditions.
According to Dr Vishal Lapshia, Orthopaedic Consultant and Joint Replacement Surgeon at AIMS Hospital, Dombivli, falling barometric pressure during the monsoon can cause tissues surrounding the joints to expand slightly, placing additional pressure on sensitive nerves and resulting in pain and stiffness.

He added that cold and damp weather may tighten muscles and ligaments, while spending more time indoors and remaining inactive can further worsen joint discomfort. People suffering from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic back pain or previous sports injuries are particularly vulnerable to seasonal flare-ups.
To minimise discomfort during the rainy season, experts recommend maintaining regular physical activity through gentle stretching and indoor exercises. Avoiding prolonged sitting is equally important, as remaining in one position for extended periods can increase stiffness. Getting up and moving every 30 to 40 minutes can help keep joints flexible.
A balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D is also essential for maintaining bone and joint health. Maintaining a healthy body weight can reduce pressure on weight-bearing joints such as the knees and hips.
Doctors also advise staying well-hydrated, even during cooler weather, and continuing prescribed medications and physiotherapy exercises without interruption.
Experts emphasise that arthritis-related pain during the monsoon can be effectively managed with proper care, an active lifestyle and timely medical guidance, allowing patients to remain comfortable throughout the rainy season.
