Mumbai, Jul 23: The makers of Aamir Khan-starrer 3 Idiots have dismissed reports claiming that the 2009 blockbuster will be re-released in theatres on September 4, 2026, calling the speculation "false and factually incorrect".
Several media reports had claimed that NH Studios was planning a large-scale theatrical re-release of the Rajkumar Hirani-directed film. However, Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films on Wednesday issued an official statement denying the reports.
Taking to Instagram, the production house said, "With reference to recent media reports claiming that 3 Idiots will be re-released on 4th September, Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films would like to clarify that these reports are false and factually incorrect."
The statement urged media organisations and fans to rely only on announcements made through the production house's verified channels and requested publications not to circulate unverified information.
The film has also been in the spotlight recently after social activist Sonam Wangchuk launched a hunger strike over the alleged NEET-UG paper leak, reviving old claims that Aamir Khan's character Phunsukh Wangdu, popularly known as Rancho, was inspired by Wangchuk.
The speculation gained traction after actor Omi Vaidya, who portrayed Chatur in the film, shared a video supporting Wangchuk and suggested that Rancho's character was based on him.
However, speaking during an interaction at the British Film Institute (BFI), Aamir Khan rejected the claim, saying neither he nor the filmmakers knew Sonam Wangchuk when 3 Idiots was being made.
He said Omi Vaidya was mistaken and added that director Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi were also unaware of Wangchuk while writing the script, making it clear that the character of Rancho was not based on him.
Released in 2009, 3 Idiots starred Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Boman Irani, Omi Vaidya and Mona Singh. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film grossed around Rs 350 crore worldwide, including Rs 202.47 crore in India.
