Chennai, Jul 23: Actor-politician Thalapathy Vijay's much-awaited film Jana Nayagan was released in theatres worldwide on Thursday, drawing massive crowds and emotional celebrations as fans turned out in large numbers to watch what is expected to be the star's final film before his full-time entry into politics.
Directed by H. Vinoth, the political action drama opened to a strong response, with advance bookings exceeding Rs 16 crore and more than seven lakh tickets sold before its release.
Jana Nayagan was originally scheduled for release on January 9, 2026, ahead of the Pongal festival and before Vijay's political transition.

However, the release was postponed after the film's certification process with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), to which it had been submitted on December 18, 2025, faced repeated delays.
Fans across Tamil Nadu celebrated the film's release with music, dancing and special shows.
Outside the Karpagam Complex in Coimbatore, supporters gathered in large numbers, cheering and dancing before the first screening.
A Vijay fan expressed her excitement, saying, "We are very excited and emotional too, as this is his last movie. We have been waiting for two hours for the screen to open."
The film's release has generated significant buzz across the country, fuelled by Vijay's decision to step away from cinema and devote himself entirely to politics, making Jana Nayagan a landmark release in his acting career.
