Monsoon health: Vitamin C-rich foods can help strengthen immunity during rainy season

New Delhi, Jul 29: The monsoon season brings relief from the summer heat, but it also increases the risk of several seasonal illnesses, including cough, cold, fever, stomach infections and skin problems. Health experts say maintaining a healthy lifestyle and consuming Vitamin C-rich foods can help support the body's natural immunity during the rainy season.

The rainy weather, increased humidity, waterlogging and sudden temperature changes create favourable conditions for bacteria, viruses and fungi to multiply. Contaminated food, unsafe drinking water and mosquito breeding further contribute to the spread of infections.

Doctors say many people experience recurring respiratory infections, viral fevers, allergies and fungal skin issues during the monsoon. However, simple precautions such as maintaining hygiene, consuming fresh food and drinking clean water can significantly reduce health risks.

According to Dr Ketan Mehta, Consulting Physician, Cardiopulmonologist and Diabetologist at Suchak Hospital and Asian Heart Hospital, Mumbai, eating freshly prepared food, maintaining personal hygiene and following a balanced diet can help strengthen the immune system during the season.

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient that supports immune function, helps in collagen production for healthy skin and acts as an antioxidant to protect cells from damage. Since the skin acts as the body's first barrier against infections, maintaining skin health becomes especially important during the humid monsoon months.

Dr Ankith Rai, Associate Director – Medical Affairs, Abbott India, said Vitamin C plays an important role in supporting overall health by helping maintain immunity, promoting collagen production and providing antioxidant protection.

Experts say people do not necessarily need supplements to increase their Vitamin C intake, as several fruits and vegetables naturally contain the nutrient. Amla, guava, oranges, other citrus fruits, tomatoes and bell peppers are among the foods that can be included in daily meals.

Along with a nutritious diet, doctors recommend drinking clean water, eating freshly cooked meals, maintaining hand hygiene, staying physically active, getting adequate sleep and keeping the skin clean and dry to prevent infections during the monsoon.

Experts also advise avoiding stagnant water around homes to prevent mosquito breeding and reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases.

While no food can completely prevent seasonal illnesses, healthy daily habits can help improve the body's ability to fight infections. A balanced diet, regular exercise, proper rest and Vitamin C-rich foods can contribute to better health throughout the rainy season.
