Lifestyle changes can reduce pancreatic fat, lowering diabetes risk: Study

New Delhi, Jul 31: Structured lifestyle modifications, including healthy eating and regular exercise, can significantly reduce fat accumulation in the pancreas, potentially lowering the risk of type 2 diabetes and improving overall metabolic health, according to a new systematic review and meta-analysis.

Excess fat in the pancreas has increasingly been linked to metabolic disorders and pancreatic diseases. While lifestyle interventions are already known to reduce liver fat, their impact on pancreatic fat has remained less certain until now.

Researchers analysed 23 interventional studies in which intrapancreatic fat was measured using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based techniques. The analysis found that structured lifestyle interventions led to a significant reduction in pancreatic fat, with low statistical variability across the studies.

The findings suggest that pancreatic fat is a modifiable risk factor and that non-pharmacological interventions can play an important role in preventing metabolic diseases.

Subgroup analyses showed that programmes combining dietary changes with regular exercise produced the greatest numerical reduction in pancreatic fat. Exercise-only and diet-only interventions also resulted in meaningful reductions, although differences between the three approaches were not statistically significant.

Researchers said the results reinforce the value of adopting healthy lifestyle habits regardless of the specific intervention, as multiple approaches appear to benefit pancreatic health.

The review also highlights the growing recognition of pancreatic fat as an important factor in the development of type 2 diabetes. Excess fat within the pancreas has been associated with impaired pancreatic function, making its reduction a promising target for diabetes prevention and management.

Unlike medication-based therapies, lifestyle modification offers an accessible and cost-effective strategy that can improve metabolic health while reducing fat deposits in multiple organs.

The authors concluded that structured lifestyle programmes should be incorporated into preventive healthcare strategies aimed at reducing pancreatic fat and improving long-term metabolic outcomes. They added that maintaining a healthy diet and engaging in regular physical activity may help lower the risk of pancreatic dysfunction before disease develops.
