Mangalore, Mar 23:
The call given by Jaago Mangalore Association to hold a unique protest againt the administration over bad roads in the city drew large support from the public here on Friday March 23.

Protestors across the city expressed their disspointment and angst over potholes, unorganized system of digging for pipelines and indifference to traffic problems, by honking for about 5 minutes non-stop.

The protest was backed by some of the voluntary bodies and trade associations like DK Autorickshaw Drivers Union, DK Bus Operators Association, Kanara Bus Owners Association, Quarry and Stone Crushers Association, Lions Clubs, Jaycees, Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Karnataka Rakshana Vedike.

What stole the attention was the enthusiasm of the members of Malnad Youth Association, which is based in different districts. The Association members were present near PVS circle in huge numbers, raising their concern over bad roads.

At the protest near Navabharat Circle in Kodialbail, KPCC secretary Ivan D’Souza said that bad roads relfect bad administration. "Only 60 percent of the funds allotted for road works is utilized and the remaining 40 percent is pocketed by officials and contractors. The government should immediately act on the issue," he urged.

As many as 20 rickshaw drivers and other vehicle drivers started honking in the middle of the road at Navabharat Circle.

Some enthusiastic citizens too joined in for the cause. However, some of the senior citizens and women riding on two-wheelers and four-wheelers stayed away keeping in mind the issue of sound pollution.

Congress leader Praveenchandra Alva also was present on the occasion. Later the protestors took a procession till PVS. In other parts of the city like Bejai (in front of Bharath Mall) and Hampankatta too people joined in with their vehicles, and so also in Mijar, Moodbidri.

Yedapadavu Junction

A separate protest was staged at Yedapadavu Junction and the public was requested to assemble at Mijar near Bolechar Bridge at 5 pm. A stage was set up and there was a road blockade at the spot at 6 pm for the next half hour, after which free movement of traffic commenced.

Speaking on the occasion, coordinator of Jaago Mangalore Vijaynath Shetty thanked the people in general and the protestors for their positive response and for gathering in huge numbers. He also thanked the police department for their cooperation and for maintaining law and order.

Shetty further said that encouraged by the huge support, the Association plans to hold similar protests twice or thrice a year to create awareness and make the authorities realize their duties and responsibilities towards the public.

He also added that the motive behind the campaign was not to create hatred towards administration but only an attempt to change the system and make it more efficient.

Hundreds of people gathered at the junction and the line of vehicles stretched for nearly a kilometre. The protest was marked by bhajans and music.

The fact of the matter is - roads in Mangalore are much better than it was few years back.
When I was a youth president ., many years back - we too took into the same agitation and then when congress was in power -great promises were given - no action taken.

Bjp or congress- here in matters of public work - we cant play blame game.
ACTION is required. Corporaters should wake up and act and solve small and short issues.
Ivan D'Souza encourages youth to the firing line. When the need of action is Initiated by police authorities to arrest agitating youth - he is not in the picture. he dissapears from the back side. so youths should rally behind such leaders who lack dedication and courage to stand and face the officials at power.

There are some good able people in Mangalore.Such people are not encouraged by congress or any political party. If they come to power things will change. But in the name of favouritism, religion and obc seats and reservations the genuine and capable leadership candidates are not encouraged.
In year 2009 when there was a congress meet at Urva church hall- there were many youngsters capable of taking over leadership from old mantle.wheras politicians like Ivan and Suresh Ballal only shouted for old politicians like janardhan poojary.they have not allowed people who are capable to come forward.when ivan -suresh ballal was encouraging a local catholic man who had no idea of administration- many hindu youngsters were backtraked. its religion and chamchagiri for these people above - actual administrators. thus the situation is such today.

Now why they are blaming people in power.correction should be done- by not being baised. these people only want to promote their chamchas and people of their own religion.not others. this is what is known as NEVO RICH Mentality. People who have seen richness, money, power only in their last generation of their families dont know what is administration.

Nice to hear from Mr.Ivan D'sousa, that BJP is spending 60% of the alloted funds. What about Congress government Mr.Ivan? How much they were spending, when they were in power.I am sure not more than 6%? Look at the conditions of roads near your home town, where U R living. When I am in Mangalore I drive through Mundkoor side road. This strech of road was completely washed away on both sides,& was not repaired at all for years, why? At least now they are filling some potholes on these roads. But the road is still in pathetic condition, not even meant to go by Bullock cart. What about the funds withrawn by MLAS & MPS for the development of their respective Constituency. How much they are spending. Are they not pocketing the complete amount?

We have to express our dis-satisfaction regarding bad roads. But I also feel that we have to do something for the lack of footpaths especially on important roads like KS Rao road, Market road etc. The normal people itself find it difficult to walk and the aged just do not have any chance of walking freely. They are abused by the vehicle owners all the time. Could something be done for that?

I wonder whether our Mangalore Corporation Administrators care for any demonstrations in regards to filling of pot holes and asphalting the damaged ones. We are fleeced with Road Tax in advance and Increase in Property taxes as they wish. I wonder where this money goes. Practically every year only this strip of the road i.e. SL Mathias Road to Kaprgiudda KMC Indoor Stadium is asphalted because only previlieged people live on this strip of the road. The other strip from KMC Stadium up to BIshop Victor Road is nelgected for the past 15 years.Residents residing on this neglected strip have represented to DC and Commissioner of Muncipal Corporation. Nothing has happened so far. Whom should we represent now? Bishop Victor Road which was asphalted last year after several meetings with the DC is in a pathetic condition. Wow!! the contractor who asphalted this road must have got a jackpot along with our Corporation Administrators. To add to our mysery, We have a wonderful sleeping Congress Corporator who has not visited the ward even once after he got elected.

We need similar protests against organized against corruption at the village levels. There is rampant corruption at the Panchayaths to give the permissions and to give documents and these protests can send some message to these corrupt officials.
There are also some people who engage in corrupt practices to get favours from the government when they are in violation of law. These are to be brought to the notice of the public and there should official complaints registered against these powerful people who misuse their money/muscle provision to get away with the law.

Stop paying direct taxes like, property tax, house tax, vehicle tax...etc. See the changes. Govt shall wake up from its deep slumber and will be pro active...

ZP,Corporation,MLA,state govt and MP of Mangalore all are belongs to BJP!!!Then whom to blame?Rulers are spread over Delhi and Tumkur resort!!In fact they love to stay in resorts/Five star hotels!!!.Special flights had been ferried several occasions for BJP MLAs to Delhi,Goa,Chennai,Hyderabad and Mumbai!!!But there were no houses completed after 2 years for flooded citizens of N. Karnataka yet. There are no drinking water due to drought several districts of Karnataka but our rulers were busy fighting for CM chair @Delhi. In fact the kind of these fights are common in four years which caused immense damage in terms of development of Karnataka.Coming to the road development, the allotments are just in paper and PWD contractors are hesitating to take contract due over dues from the Govt. This what happened for the road of GURUVAYANAKERE-UPPINANGDY for the past 6-7 years. The amount sanctioned for road repair in DK/UDUPI on eve of VISHWA TULU SAMMELANA still not reached the destination. This is the small tip of iceberg. Therefore, better bear another one year to get good roads and maintenance.
