Imphal, Aug 28: Churachandpur district in Manipur is witnessing a sharp rise in cases of dengue, typhoid and scrub typhus, with children reportedly among the worst affected.

Government hospitals, particularly those in Churachandpur town, are seeing a large number of children suffering from high fever and related symptoms. More than 100 children have reportedly tested positive for dengue, while the state health directorate has recorded over 105 dengue-positive cases. Health officials and local reports, however, indicate that the number of probable cases could be higher.

The rise in infections has been reported following recent rainfall, which has created favourable conditions for the spread of mosquito-borne and other diseases.

The Churachandpur District Hospital's children's ward has reportedly been unable to accommodate the growing number of patients. Authorities are considering using the orthopaedic and surgical wards to accommodate children suffering from fever and other illnesses. Private hospitals in the town are also reportedly crowded with children showing similar symptoms.

In view of the situation, schools across Churachandpur district have been ordered to remain closed until August 31 to reduce the risk of infections spreading among students. Student unions have also urged authorities to extend the closure if the health situation does not improve.

Health authorities have advised residents to keep their homes and surroundings clean, remove stagnant water where mosquitoes can breed and use mosquito nets and other protective measures to prevent mosquito bites. People have also been advised to consume boiled or otherwise safe drinking water to reduce the risk of typhoid.

Residents have been urged to seek medical attention promptly if children develop high fever or other concerning symptoms.
