Mumbai, Sep 30: A Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) employee was killed and two others injured after a speeding car allegedly rammed into two scooters on CD Road in Khar West on Monday.
Police have registered an FIR against retired honorary Brigadier and former Rajapur MP Sudhir Sawant in connection with the accident. CCTV footage captured the crash.
The footage shows the car hitting the scooters on the busy road, following which Iyappan Harijan, 41, was trapped underneath the vehicle. Bystanders lifted the car and pulled him out.
Harijan and his wife Nancy, 37, were then taken to Bhabha Hospital in an autorickshaw. Harijan had suffered severe injuries and reportedly lost consciousness several times while being taken to the hospital. He later died due to blood loss.
Nancy, who was riding pillion, suffered bruises on her left hand and other parts of her body. Another scooter rider, Rahul Ghanekar, sustained a fracture to his hand.
Recalling the incident, Nancy said she saw her husband trapped beneath the car, with only his leg visible. People who gathered at the spot lifted the vehicle and pulled him out.
She said Harijan initially managed to sit up but had sustained injuries to his head, face and other parts of his body.
The Khar police on Tuesday registered an FIR against Sawant, 71, under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) pertaining to causing death by negligence and rash and dangerous driving.
Police said further action would be taken after Sawant is discharged from hospital. He is currently undergoing treatment after his blood pressure rose following the accident.
According to Nancy's complaint, the couple had left their home in Santacruz West around 4.15 p.m. to shop in Bandra for an event at their residence when the car allegedly hit their scooter from behind.
Harijan had worked with MTNL for 16 years before joining the BMC's cleaning services department about a month ago.
Sawant, a former Rajapur MP, had remained active in party politics until late 2019.
