Ranya Rao fined Rs 89 crore in gold smuggling case; 399-page order issued

Bengaluru, Oct 2: Sandalwood actress Ranya Rao, an accused in a gold smuggling case, has been fined Rs 89 crore by the Customs Department in connection with the alleged attempt to smuggle around 14.8 kg of gold from Dubai to Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru.

The Customs Department has issued a 399-page order in the case. According to the order, the movement of 113 kg of gold over a period of one year has been established.

Ranya Rao, along with her co-accused, allegedly transported 113 kg of gold from Dubai between March 7, 2024 and February 18, 2025. Details of the alleged operation came to light following the arrest of the accused by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials.

The Customs Department has imposed a penalty of Rs 89 crore on Ranya Rao in connection with the gold smuggling case. The order has been issued by Customs Joint Director Sandeep, and Ranya Rao has been informed about the penalty through a letter.

The Customs action relates to allegations that Ranya Rao was involved in gold transactions with the other accused, including Tarun and three others.

Earlier reports had also detailed the DRI's investigation into the case. In September 2025, the DRI had reportedly imposed penalties totalling Rs 270 crore on Ranya Rao and three others in connection with the alleged smuggling of more than 127 kg of gold, with Ranya Rao facing a reported penalty of Rs 102.55 crore.

    I welcome the judgment and the ₹89 crore penalty. But the alleged masterminds behind the smuggling network must also be identified and punished if their involvement is proven. Their identities should be made public as per law. Accountability must reach everyone involved.
